What is DNS Server? How To View DNS Server Settings?

As like our phonebook, The Domain Name System or DNS server is the phonebook of the Internet.

When you want to search anything on Google search engine, you have to type the IP address. That is the Google search engine needs the IP address of the website you want to visit.

So you write the IP address and can access the website, If we had to remember the IP addresses of all our favourite websites, we can remember it easily. But what if someone wants to visit a lot of website, it will be more difficult because Human beings are just not that good at remembering strings of numbers. For everyone it is easy to words and keywords, however, and that is where domain names come in.

For e.g. it is easy to remember cybertecz.in than its IP address something 151.101.129.143

Computers and other network devices on the internet use an IP address to route your request to the site you’re trying to reach. This is similar to dialling a phone number to connect to the person you’re trying to call. Thanks to DNS, though, you don’t have to keep your own address book of IP addresses. Instead, you just connect through a domain name server, also called a DNS server or name server, which manages a massive database that maps domain names to IP addresses.

Without DNS server, the internet would shut down very quickly.

How to check your DNS server settings:

  • Click on Start, select Control Panel then double click on Network Connections.
  • Right-click on the network connection in use and select Properties.
  • Double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  • Make sure “Obtain an IP address automatically” is selected.
  • Make sure “Obtain DNS server address automatically” is selected.

DNS Server and IP Address:

You just learned that the primary job of a domain name server, or DNS server, is to resolve (translate) a domain name into an IP address. That sounds like a simple task, and it would be, except for the following points:

  • There are billions of IP addresses currently in use, and most machines have a human-readable name as well.
  • DNS servers (cumulatively) are processing billions of requests across the internet at any given time.
  • Millions of people are adding and changing domain names and IP addresses each day.

Does Malware Attacks can Change DNS Server Settings?

Yes they can, so always run an antivirus program because malware can attack your computer in a way that changes the DNS server settings.
