Best Foldable Phone 2021: You can Buy it Right Now

The idea of a smartphone that foldable the phone out to a larger display has been something of a dream product for both users and phone makers. Now, phones with true flexible and foldable displays are finally a reality. The big problem is that at the moment, they are very expensive.

There were numerous hurdles, but the foldable phones did make it to markets in late 2019. Samsung managed to retail more than 400,000 units of the 1st-gen Galaxy Fold in spite of the exorbitant price.

As the list is not much, a very Brands has come up with Foldable devices.

  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G
  • Motorola Razr 5G (2020)
  • Huawei Mate Xs/Mate X2
  • Royole Flexpai 2

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 specs:

Here’s on the first is Samsung’s foldable phone: Galaxy Z Fold 2 is the second-gen Samsung foldable that seems to have refined most of the issues of its predecessor. The handset has a 7.6-inch QXGA+ (1768 x 2208) Dynamic AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

On the specs front, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 now features a Snapdragon 865 Plus processor, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage, and 5G support.

This is a Samsung device, with a different build design. Riding high on the Galaxy Fold 2’s popularity, Samsung launched its 5G variant of its vertical foldable phone — the Galaxy Z Flip. It is a flip n’ fold clamshell, supported by the ‘hideaway’ hinge mechanism. Samsung touts varied use cases in different angles thanks to this joint.

It has got an ‘Infinity Flex’ AMOLED glass panel that measures 6.7-inches and is of 22:9 aspect ratio and 2636 x 1080 resolution.

However, the specs of the Galaxy Z Flip are way better than those of the Razr. There’s a Snapdragon 865 Plus, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage.

The software is Android 10 (upgradable to Android 11) based One UI. Rest, you also get 5G, a USB-C port, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, and 4G LTE.

Motorola Razr 5G (2020)

  • SoC: Snapdragon 765G
  • RAM: 8GB

  • Front camera: 20MP
  • Battery: 2,800mAh
  • Software: Android 10

Lenovo-owned Motorola quite literally morphed its 15-year old iconic Razr flip phone into a foldable phone, switching the numerical keyboard for a flexible OLED screen display that folds into an almost-square when you shut the phone, with a second Quick View display on the front.

Throwing back to the classic Razr V3 mobile flip phone that was first released in 2004. the new Razr not only looks like that classic flip phone, but it’s about as thin as the original at 14mm. However, when it unfolds from its retro clamshell body, it exposes a large 6.2-inch 21:9 display.

When folded, you can still use a square 2.7-inch display on the outside to check notifications, control media, and more. You can even take selfies while using the small display since the 48MP rear camera turns into a front-facing camera when the phone is folded.

The 2.7-inch OLED cover display in the Razr’s folded state is called a Quick-View display. It’s used for peeking notifications, sending preset quick replies, control music playback, etc.

Inside it is running on a mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, with Android 10 on top. The Razr ticks on a 2800mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging.

Huawei Mate X2/ Mate Xs

Huawei Mate X2 specs:

  • Display: 8-inch and 6.45-inch (folded)
  • SoC: Kirin9000
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 256/512GB
  • Cameras: 50, 16, 12, and 8MP
  • Front camera: 16
  • Battery: 4,500mAh
  • Software: Android 10

In February 2021, Huawei launched the Mate X2. This foldable phone’s 8-inch display folds inward like a book, much like the Galaxy Z Fold 2. However, once folded you can still use a secondary display on the outside so you can use it more like a standard smartphone. Inside, there is a Kirin 9000 processor and 8GB of RAM. You also can get either 256GB or 512GB of internal expandable storage.

Xs specs:

Huawei Mate Xs specs:

  • Display: 8-inch and 6.6-inch (folded)
  • SoC: Kirin 990
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Storage: 512GB
  • Cameras: 40, 16, and 8MP
  • Front camera: N/A
  • Battery: Two totaling 4,500mAh
  • Software: Android 10

The Xs has its screen on the exterior fold – presented as a 6.6-inch main screen and elongated 6.38-inch screen on the rear. Unfolded, the two present as an 8-inch tablet form.

The Mate Xs offers the same camera specifications, design, and display as the original Mate X, but it has a redesigned hinge, the more recent Kirin 990 chipset, a slightly higher price tag, and no Google services.

Royole Flexpai 2

  • Display: 7.8 inches, 1440 x 1920 pixels
  • SoC:  2.84 GHz, Octa Core Processor
  • Cameras: 64 MP (Wide Angle) 16 MP (Ultra Wide) 8 MP (Telephoto) with autofocus
  • Software: Android 10

Other specs consist of a 7.8-inch panel in the unfolded state, quad cameras, 5G-capable Snapdragon 865, LPDDR5 RAM, and UFS 3.0 storage.

Royole beat everyone to the punch, announcing the first commercially-available smartphone with a flexible display back at CES 2019 in the FlexPai. It has now released the second generation model in the FlexPai 2.

Many wouldn’t know that it wasn’t Samsung or any other big shots, but Royole, a lesser-known Chinese company that launched the world’s first foldable phone named Flexpai. The tech community, however, was not impressed by the rushed-up barebone device. The brand then sometime later came out with the Flexpai 2.
