If Problem With Aarogya Setu App? Don’t Download It, Says Prasad
Aarogya Setu app is the Indian COVID-19 tracking mobile application developed by the National Informatics Centre and that comes under the government Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Description can be given as “The bridge for liberation from disease from Aa for without, rogya for disease and setu for bridge“.
Aarogya Setu has four sections:
- Your Status (tells the risk of getting COVID-19 for the user),
- Self Assess (lets the user know the risk of being infected),
- COVID-19 Update (gives updates on local and national COVID-19 cases) and
- E-pass (If applied for E-pass, it will be available).
Who can access the data from Aarogya Setu?
Data from the app goes to the developer – In other words, National Informatics Centre – the state and central ministries for health, the National Disaster Management Authority and all health related ministries.
For whom is Aarogya Setu app compulsory?
As it is for everyone but it is compulsory to, all government officials who were visiting their offices for work, such as Health, Defence, Police, Family Welfare, NIC, FCI etc, are strictly mandated to have the Aarogya Setu app installed and running on their smartphones.
Similarly, “We have come up with Aarogya Setu-IVS for non-smartphone users. People just has to give a missed call after which they will be assist to set it up on their 2G phones,”
Feature, Privacy and, concerns about Aarogya Setu:
Feature: Mandatory for govt and private sector employees. Uses GPS and Bluetooth for location tracking.
Privacy: Collects user’s location data every 15 minutes and store it locally. Information is uploaded on servers, operated and managed by the govt, when the user has been tested positive, or is at high or moderate risk of infection.
Concerns: Govt collects data on age, name, sex, phone number, profession, travel history of past 30 days.
Claims on Aarogya Setu app:
The Aarogya Setu app app, is a sophisticated surveillance system, outsourced to a pvt operator, with no institutional oversight – raising serious data security & privacy concerns. However, technology can help keep us safe; but fear must not be leverage to track citizens without their consent.
Safety claimed by Aarogya Setu:
To prevent data misuse, the information will be stripped of everything except the demographic data, so that personal identification is not possible.
“This app is completely safe and secure—data is secured for a very limited purpose and for a very limited period of time,” Prasad told.
Ravi Shankar Prasad also said, “This helps avoid your contact with a person who is inflicted and the whole purpose of this app is to protect you.”
In addition, He reiterated that small recordings get automatically delete within 30 days and the remaining data also gets delete within 180 days.
After that, hitting out at the Opposition over its allegations that the app is a “sophisticated surveillance system.”. Therefore, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “If anyone has any issue with the Aarogya Setu app, then do not download it”.
