Google Maps Introduces New Wheelchair Accessible Places Features
Google Maps Update: On the eve of Global Accessibility Awareness Day i.e May 21st, 2020. Google has announced a new, welcome, and no doubt long-asked-for feature to its Google Maps app: wheelchair accessibility info. Global Accessibility Awareness Day is marked annually on the third Thursday of May.
Google Maps has wheelchair accessibility information for more than 15 million places around the world. That number has more than doubled since 2017. Thanks to the dedication of more than 120 million Local Guides and others who’ve responded to our call to share accessibility information.
Knowing before you go, is the best strategy to visit. Whether a destination is wheelchair accessible, just as effortlessly as looking up the address.
To activate this feature:
To activate the feature, simply head on over to Google Maps ‘ Settings, tap ‘accessibility settings’. And then toggle ‘accessible places.’ You’ll then see a wheelchair icon if the business or location has an accessible entrance. If it does, you can tap on the location to see a more detailed breakdown, such as to see if that accessibility extends to seating, restrooms, and parking as well as entrances.
Google has been collecting information on locations’ accessibility for a couple of years, and this new setting puts it front and center.
