Apple Starts Manufacturing iPhone 11 In India
iPhone 11 Latest News: Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, tweeted on Friday that Apple had begun assembling iPhone 11 models in India. Apple did not comment on this story.
The new development comes just a little over nine months after the Cupertino giant started the assembly line for the iPhone XR in the country. The local assembly of the iPhone 11 would help the company avoid a 20 percent tax that it is needed to pay for importing the handset from its global manufacturing facilities. Apple has Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron as the suppliers for its iPhone models that all are presently making huge investments in the Indian market.
Why did Apple start manufacturing iPhone in India
This development is significant since it comes at a time when the ties between the US and China are strained. According to a report in The Economic Times, Apple would beef up the production of the devices in phases and could also export the made in India iPhone 11, thus, reducing its dependence on China. The move is also likely to result in the iPhone maker cutting the price of the model in the country as local production saves the tech giant 22 percent import duty.
Companies assembling iPhone in India
Earlier this month, Foxconn, which is a leading supplier for iPhone and other Apple devices, reportedly planned to invest up to $1 billion (roughly Rs. 7,491 crores) to expand its India factory where it assembles iPhone models.
Foxconn has begun assembling iPhone 11 units in India at its Chennai plant. The news has been confirmed by numerous local outlets and marks Apple’s made in India iPhone production expansion following the iPhone XR from last year.
Meanwhile, the iPhone maker is also likely contemplating to make the new iPhone SE or iPhone SE 2020 at the Wistron plant near Bangalore. The facility was earlier producing the iPhone SE which was later withdrawn.
