Apple Search Engine will Develop and Compete with Google
Apple stepping up efforts to develop its own search engine. According to a report by the Financial Times, Apple is developing its own search engine that will replace Google in Apple is developing its own search engine that will compete and replace Google in all of its popular products.
The latest iOS 14 update had hinted at Apple’s own search engine as the Cupertino-giant had displayed its own search results. Apart from this, Apple had also posted job openings on LinkedIn for search engineers.
With its own search engine, as well as existing agreements that also see Microsoft Bing, Yahoo! and DuckDuckGo available as search engines on Safari, Apple hopes to have an alternative system in place just in case regulators decide to block this agreement. Apple already has the Applebot web crawler to index and build the database for web searches.
Right now, Google pays Apple around $10 billion per year to be the default search engine on the iPhone and iPad. The amount reportedly accounts for 20 percent of Apple’s Services revenue. The year is about to come to an end and so is the deal, which might not be extended, due to a reported antitrust case against Google by the US Department of Justice regarding this deal.
One of the biggest reasons behind Apple creating a search engine is the company’s strong privacy stance and its stance against ad-funded services. However, if it were to develop a search engine, it would have to focus on advertisements to recoup the amount Google used to pay it every year.
